Become a volunteer

Being a volunteer

With Habitat for Humanity, you have the opportunity to be a part of the change you want to see in your community.

Because of the help of people like you, whole neighborhoods improve and completely transform. Through this transformation, families achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life.

We offer several opportunities to build or repair homes with families, become a board member or join one of our committees.  You can even invite your friends and family to join us.

Learn how you can join us as a volunteer by choosing from the options below.

Volunteers are crucial to our work.  When volunteers share their time and labor to help us build homes, we're able to sell them affordably to families in need of housing.  While we're best known for building homes, we offer a variety of volunteer opportunities beyond construction sites too.  Volunteers support us in our offices with programs and administrative services, and fundraising events.

We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, skill levels, and interests.  Whether you're looking to volunteer on a regular basis or be hands-on for a special project, we can help you find your fit and get started.

Description of the position for being a volunteer.

Please fill out our volunteer form (See below) and either mail it to PCHFH P.O. Box 613, Luray VA 22835 or drop it off at our office located at 2 Amiss Ave, Luray Va 22835. We couldn't do it without you!

Home Preservation

We offer home repair services to homeowners so they can continue to live in safe, decent homes for years to come. Some of our home repair work includes painting, landscaping,  weatherization and minor repair services to preserve home exteriors and revitalize neighborhoods.

How does Home Preservation work?

  • Families partner with Habitat based on income, need and willingness to help.
  • We use volunteer labor and donated materials to keep costs low.
  • An affordable loan is made to the homeowner to cover the cost of the work. Payments are placed in a revolving fund to help Home Preservation serve others in need.

Habitat’s home repair program would not be possible without the generosity of Valspar, the co-founder and underwriter of our Home Preservation program.

Why do we offer these exterior maintenance services?

  • Families need to live in safe and well-maintained homes.
  • Neighborhoods become revitalized.
  • Community connections are made.
  • Affordable housing inventory is preserved.

Preparing for a build siteVolunteering with Habitat for Humanity is fun, fast-paced and fulfilling.

Although different build sites and local Habitat affiliates have their own unique needs, here are some important general tips to keep in mind when preparing for a day volunteering on a Habitat build.

Know you’re in good hands

Usually, we don’t ask our new volunteers to bring anything except a great attitude and a willingness to be flexible.

  • Safety is our number one priority.
  • We discourage jewelry, loose-fitting clothing and items that could contribute to an accident.
  • Wear sturdy close-toed shoes.
  • We stress dressing for the weather, such as sunscreen and a hat in summer.
  • We try to be specific about beginning times, ending times and provisions for lunch. Check with your local contact for specific information.

Be ready to learn and don’t be afraid to ask

You don’t need to have prior construction experience to help with a Habitat build. Just come out with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

  • Habitat provides the tools and supplies you will need while volunteering.
  • Instruction is provided before you will be asked to complete a task.
  • A site supervisor or construction leader will be onsite to make sure you feel safe and empowered.
  • Speak up if you have questions.
  • Ask for help if you need it!

Get comfortable

No matter your skill level, be willing to work and probably get a little dirty. Remember, you’re truly helping Habitat partner with families for decent, affordable shelter.

Nothing is more important for Habitat for Humanity than the welfare of the people we work with every day — those in the communities where we work, our volunteers and our employees. Our mission calls us to serve. Our volunteers, staff members and partners all must feel safe in order for us to truly join together to build a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.

Our commitment to safeguarding

In accordance with our foundational mission principles, Habitat for Humanity is committed to the highest ethical standards, has no tolerance for and opposes all forms of discrimination, sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment.

Guidance for raising concerns

Employees and members of the communities where we work are encouraged to report incidents of exploitation, abuse or harassment through our confidential reporting system, the Habitat Ethics and Accountability Line.

Volunteer code of conduct

Becoming a Habitat volunteer comes with great rewards and responsibilities. Volunteers are representatives of Habitat for Humanity and our ministry. In addition to complying with all laws, regulations and Habitat for Humanity policies, all volunteers are expected to follow Habitat’s volunteer code of conduct (see below).

Equal opportunity

Habitat celebrates, represents and values the differences of the people we serve in communities around the world, as well as the volunteers and others we work alongside every day.
