Before you send your application, please read carefully the following
Below is a list of qualifications that you must meet for a Habitat for Humanity home. If you believe you meet these requirements, we can mail you an application. Please provide your mailing address. There is an application fee of $20 for married and $10 for single applicants.
1. You must have a housing need. One consideration in the selection process is to ensure that we are giving priority to the neediest families in our area. You need to describe why your current housing is inadequate on the application.
2. You need to have resided in Page County for the past year.
3. If you have ever been convicted of a crime, other than traffic offenses, please provide written details and we will evaluate on a case by case basis.
4. You must have a total income that falls within a range of the median income of Page County, as set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and established by Habitat for Humanity International for Page County, and not set by the Family Selection Committee. Please see the table at the end of this letter for specifics.
5. You must have a manageable debt load. You need to have a satisfactory recent credit history and be able to show that your ability to meet your current financial obligations will not be threatened by home ownership. We will follow-up with a request for a Credit Report once we receive your application.
6. With your permission, we will verify employment and other income, verify checking and savings account balances, get a statement from your current and previous landlords, have a credit check done, and ask for credit references (If you have prior credit or bankruptcy issues, you are not automatically disqualified, but it is very important that you provide the required background explanation and status when you return the application to us. See Section 11 of the Application).
7. If you are approved for a Habitat home, we ask that you be willing to join in programs to learn and practice budgeting, home repair and maintenance.
8. If approved for a Habitat home, we require that all adult (18 years and older) members in your household be willing to work “sweat equity” hours for a total of 350 hours. In most cases this work will be required before construction will begin on your home. There are a number of different ways that you can fulfill this requirement, some of which do not involve physical labor. We will assist you in arranging for the options best suited for you to meet this requirement.
9. If approved for a Habitat home, a down payment of about $1,000 is required prior to construction beginning on your home. Please note that Section 8 of the application asks where you will get this down payment.
10. If you are approved for a home and you meet the sweat-equity and down payment requirements, then we will sell you a home at cost. Habitat house payments are used by Habitat to build more houses with other families; therefore it is very important that house payments are made on time.
